Social Security warns of new scam that can cause major financial losses

Social Security recipients are being warned of an ongoing scam that leaves them vulnerable to data theft and financial losses. The warning was issued last week by the Social Security Administration (SSA) Office of the Inspector General (OIG).
The alert says potential victims are receiving emails from scammers pretending to be with the SSA, but are really designed to steal personal information when the target clicks on a link in the email.
“We are seeing a sharp increase in fraudulent emails designed to look like official Social Security Administration communications,” said Michelle L. Anderson, Assistant Inspector General for Audit as First Assistant. “These messages are not from Social Security. Anyone who receives one should delete it immediately and report it.”
