Local banks warn of a new check-cashing scheme that's targeting young adults

YAKIMA -- A new check cashing scam has made its way to banks in our area.
Unlike many other scams, officials at Solarity Credit Union (SCU) say this one doesn't target the elderly or more vulnerable people.
"This scam is different in the aspect of it's actually targeting those young adults on the social media platforms. Those who are looking for influencers or coming up quickly through social media," Sara Wallbaum, Vice President of member services at SCU, said.
The scammers first connect with people through social media accounts like Facebook or Instagram.
They send them a private message building up a trusting connection.
Then, they ask for a small fee if you would like to be an influencer for a product or service.
