New Fraud Scam with State of MN Tax Credit Deposit

Minnesota

FRPA received a call from a member stating that their customers were receiving call from bad actors about receiving their State of MN tax credit deposit.

Customers are saying that the bad actor says they are an employee of the State of MN and that the customer must provide them with their bank routing number and account number so that the state can direct deposit the credit payment (it's also called a One-Time Tax Rebate) into their account.  This of course is a scam.  If the customer received their tax return or payment via ACH in the past, the State is using the same routing and account number.

As a FI you may find that some of your accounts are closed. Under the ACH Rules, you are required to return any credit or payment you can not post.

The payments began on Thursday, August 17 and so did the scams.
