Scam targets nonprofits

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) - Scamming on the internet is becoming more common every day. Two local nonprofits almost got baited by one.
Closet 701 and The God’s Child Project received the same series of emails.
Someone sent a message saying they wanted to donate some money to the nonprofits. Then, they sent a check.
“I happened to be at Closet 701, and I just heard them talking about receiving some big checks,” said Brenda Ellingson, volunteer at both organizations. “I didn’t really ask many questions about it, I just heard them say, and then I came here and she was taking pictures of envelopes and stuff because she said they received some big checks.”
