48th person convicted in Feeding Our Future fraud scheme

KARE 11

MINNEAPOLIS — A 34-year-old Mankato man is the 48th person to be convicted in the massive Feeding Our Future meal fraud case.

Asad Abshir pleaded guilty to money laundering for his role in the $250 million dollar scam. He stole about $750,000, and the feds were able to get back most of that money.

“This guilty plea is another step in exposing the staggering levels of fraud that have been hiding in plain sight across Minnesota,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson in a press release. “This defendant laundered money meant to feed children and funneled it into a web of shell companies and luxury spending. As FBI Director Kah Patel recently said, this case stands as one of the most egregious abuses of public trust in recent memory. The people of Minnesota deserve better.”
